5 Steps to Getting Your Home Organized
Reflect on a facet of your life or home that feels entirely out of control. Is it tidying up your garage, organizing your refrigerator, or sorting through a drawer filled with miscellaneous items? Perhaps it's the box of assorted cables you hesitate to discard 'just in case'?
Have you ever returned home from an enjoyable day feeling uplifted, only for your spirits to plummet as soon as you step inside? If this scenario resonates with you—and it does with many of our clients—you'll know how confronting disorder can evoke feelings of embarrassment, overwhelm, and even despair.
Acknowledging that you need to address this disarray is crucial. You recognize that the lack of organization not only wastes your valuable time and money but also hampers your focus on the aspects of life that are most meaningful to you. The real challenge lies not in realizing a change is necessary, but in determining how to start!
When your home is burdened with clutter in various areas, it's easy to ignore it or even feel tempted to leave immediately. However, you don't have to let the clutter win. What you truly need is a structured approach and some time—here are some expert tips from our amazing partner Bee Organized!
Choose One Specific Area
Start with a manageable scope by selecting just one spot in your home. Whether it's the first eyesore you see, a junk drawer that frustrates you daily, or a purse that seems to swallow your belongings, begin there.
Allocate Time
Organizing your space isn't instantaneous—it requires dedicated effort. The scope of your project will dictate the time needed. Sorting a few holiday items might take an hour, whereas revamping your pantry could consume an afternoon. Larger zones, like a neglected basement or attic, might need a whole weekend or several sessions to complete. Consider the time you spend as an investment, yielding future savings in time, money, and stress.
Categorize Your Items
After selecting your area and scheduling the time, the next step is visibility. Empty the contents of the area you're tackling, whether it's a drawer or a closet, to get a clear overview. If dealing with a kitchen counter, for instance, prepare to sort items into nine categories, each with its own designated 'Drop Zone'—label these zones with a Post-it Note or tape. Whether you're sorting a small drawer or an entire room, spreading out is essential.
As you sort through each item, decide its appropriate category. The sorting categories are:
Keep: Reserve the best spots for frequently used, important items.
Trash: Dispose of useless or broken items immediately.
Donate: Set aside items that are still functional for donation.
Return: Group items that need to be returned to stores or friends.
Fix: Keep items that are functional but need minor repairs together.
Give: Identify items that would be better suited for someone else.
Sell: Prepare items in good condition for sale.
Recycle: Organize recyclables according to local regulations.
Relocate: Move items that belong in other areas of your home.
Designate a Home for Each Item
Strategically assigning a place for each item is crucial for sustainable organization. Evaluate the necessity and placement of each item, considering its usefulness and importance. Utilize clear storage solutions like bins and labels to keep similar items grouped and accessible.
Maintain the Order
Once you've organized a space, maintaining it is key. Establish a routine for regular upkeep, declutter periodically, and ensure new items have their own designated spots. Encourage household members to participate and be willing to adjust the system as needed to keep everything in its place.
Establish a Routine – Set aside dedicated time regularly to tidy up and maintain your space. This could be a daily or weekly routine, depending on your needs and the size of the space.
- Declutter Regularly – Periodically assess your belongings and perform the Power Purge.
- Designate Homes for New Items – Any time you bring a new item into your space, make sure you find it a home right away. Consider following the One-In-One-Out Rule: for every new item you bring into your space, remove an old or unused item.
- Clean as You Go – Incorporate the habit of cleaning up as you go about your daily activities. Put items away immediately after use, and clean up small messes promptly to prevent them from escalating.
- Involve Everyone – Encourage everyone you’re sharing space with to learn where everything goes and the steps you are taking to maintain the organized spaces.
- Adjust as Needed – Be flexible and willing to adjust your systems as your needs change.
Remember, the goal isn't perfection but functional and enjoyable living spaces. Starting with just one area can motivate you to continue improving other areas. You have the plan, the motivation, and our expert guidance.
