Discover Downtown Orlando: Places to Explore
The Downtown region of Orlando has been lauded by Orlando magazine as one of the top neighborhoods to reside in. Adorned with stunning business skyscrapers that dominate the cityscape, this urban hub is a bustling commercial district, perfect for those seeking a harmonious blend of life, work, and play. Among its offerings are some of the finest seafood establishments, along with notable theaters, clubs, museums, and parks to explore.
The nightlife is a major draw to the area as well as the Walt Disney Amphitheater, which is a popular place for festivals, dance performances, and outdoor concerts throughout the year.
Church Street
Church Street, often considered the heart of Downtown Orlando, is a must-visit for newcomers eager to familiarize themselves with the city. Boasting some of Orlando's top eateries, a vibrant nightlife, and the historic Railroad Depot (now neighbored by the modern 'SunRail'), it's a hub of activity and history.
The Railroad Depot, constructed in 1889, stands as a testament to Orlando's rich heritage, predating the arrival of Disney and Universal. The SunRail, a commuter rail initiative, connects Church Street to three other key downtown Orlando locales. Here, visitors can discover an array of clubs, theaters, shopping centers, and the expansive Amway Center sports arena.
Amway Center
The Amway Center stands as a premier attraction in Downtown Orlando. Nestled in the city's central district close to the renowned Church Street Station, this multipurpose venue, which opened its doors in 2010, can metamorphose from a concert hall to a basketball court, ice hockey rink, or indoor soccer field. At present, the Amway Center proudly hosts three of Orlando's top sports teams: the NBA's Orlando Magic, the Arena Soccer League's Orlando Predators, and the ECHL's Orlando Solar Bears.
Lake Eola Park
Lake Eola Park stands as a symbolic centerpiece in Downtown Orlando, making it one of the most captured and recognized sites in the area.
Spanning 23 acres off East Washington Street, Lake Eola Park boasts a walkway nearly a mile long encircling the lake. It's also home to an event amphitheater, a children's play area, a striking red Chinese pagoda, and a renowned fountain.
Regarded fondly as one of Orlando's prime natural havens (distinct from the attractions of Disney or Universal), Lake Eola Park serves as a serene downtown retreat for picnics, fitness activities, paddle-boating, or simply a breather from the adjacent towering buildings.
For locals and visitors alike, an authentic Lake Eola experience isn't complete without a journey across its waters on a swan paddle boat. Accommodating up to four riders, these boats are available for rent from Tuesday to Sunday, 10 am to 7 pm.
Wall Street Plaza
Wall Street Plaza in Downtown Orlando serves as a bustling epicenter for both day and night entertainment, ranking high on the list of fun places in the city. With its collection of shops, eateries, and bars that morph into vibrant clubs as night falls, one can seamlessly transition from dusk till dawn without stepping out of the plaza.
The plaza's open space is a magnet for crowds during special occasions like New Year’s Eve, St. Patrick’s Day, and Halloween, as well as local festivities like RumFest, Florida Music Fest, and City Skip Day.
Moreover, to enhance the weekend experience, the street becomes pedestrian-only every Friday and Saturday night from 9 pm, making way for their signature 'Block Parties' featuring live DJ performances — and all without an entrance fee.
